Brandy or Black Death first appeared in 1935 when the prohibition of alcohol in Iceland was partially lifted. Originally, the black label on the bottle was chosen to make the product unattractive and limit demand, but the label had the opposite effect and brandy quickly became an extremely popular drink. Today, the label is a well-known symbol of this national drink of Icelanders and the nation itself. The origin of the recipe itself is unknown, but Brennivín is a distilled wine brewed from fermented potatoes and seasoned with cumin.
